Architecture, Design & Graphics Collection

Established in 1990, the Department of Architecture, Design & Graphics has become a pioneer among museums nationwide in the presentation and collection of modern and contemporary design. Numbering over 4,000 works, the Museum’s diverse architecture, design, and graphics collection encompasses a broad range of design practices, including architecture, decorative design, graphic design, industrial design, and functional craft.

The Department is also the steward of the AIGA Design Archives, a major acquisition received by the Museum in 2006 representing the most comprehensive holding of American graphic design from 1980 to the present in the world. This collection of approximately 8,000 objects is augmented annually with a gift of approximately 200 items representing the winners of that year’s AIGA design competitions.

The Denver Art Museum has an important collection of eighteenth and nineteenth-century innovative furniture. This work table is an elegant piece of late Neo-Classical design. It is also an example of a piece of “mechanical furniture,” a term used to describe pieces that open up and have multiple functions.
